Patricia S. King, R.N. began her career providing nursing care to critically ill surgical patients. In 1998 she began working at a local prosecutor’s office as a Community Outreach Coordinator in the Domestic Violence Unit providing outreach and training to a variety of disciplines. She was promoted to Investigator attending the police academy for her P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training Council) certification.
As an investigator, her area of interest turned to elder abuse cases. To improve outcomes of elder abuse cases, Pat became a member of a Human Service Team comprised of an Adult Protective Services supervisor, an Ombudsman, a detective and a prosecutor. Team members realized cases could be handled more efficiently and victims served more effectively with everyone working together. The team was successful in identifying and investigating abuse and was instrumental in seeing that laws were changed to better protect seniors.
In December 2006 Pat came to work as the first Forensic Specialist in the Division of Aging.
During her first year she developed an elder abuse work group comprised of professionals who are mandated reporters and first responders. The group is working to address a multitude of identified gaps in services. She was instrumental in developing policy and procedures for a review team looking at unexpected deaths and serious injuries of disabled individuals and elders. She developed and provided elder abuse in-service training to one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the state. The training took two months and there was much dialogue with the officers including barriers they face daily in dealing with calls related to this population.
